ICD-10-CM code lookup

ICD-10-CM is the United States’ clinical modification of the WHO ICD-10, used for diagnosis coding on claims and in records. Search all 74,706 complete codes, or browse the 22 chapters below.

How ICD-10-CM codes are built

Three to seven characters; only a complete code can be billed.

  • The first three characters are the category (E11 Type 2 diabetes mellitus). A category with subdivisions is not a billable code on its own.
  • Characters 4–6 add detail: site, cause, severity, laterality (E11.9, E11.65).
  • Some chapters, injuries above all, require a 7th character for the encounter: A initial, D subsequent, S sequela, with placeholder X where a code is shorter (S93.401A).
  • ICD-10-CM is more specific than the international WHO ICD-10. If you work outside the US, see WHO ICD-10 or your national edition, such as ICD-10-SE.

ICD-10-CM is developed by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and is based on the WHO ICD-10. Codes and titles are reproduced unchanged from the FY2026 code list (effective 1 October 2025). Their use here does not imply endorsement by CDC, HHS or the U.S. Government. Changes effective on or after 1 October 2026 may not be reflected yet; check the current release at cdc.gov or cms.gov before submitting claims.
