KVÅ code lookup

KVÅ, Klassifikation av vårdåtgärder, is the Swedish classification of health care procedures. It was developed by Socialstyrelsen (the National Board of Health and Welfare) and has been managed by E-hälsomyndigheten (the Swedish eHealth Agency) since 1 June 2026. Care providers record a KVÅ code for what they do and report it to Socialstyrelsen’s National Patient Register, where it feeds statistics, quality registers, research and reimbursement.

It has two parts:

• KKÅ, surgical procedures. The Swedish version of the Nordic NCSP classification. Codes have three letters and two digits; the first letter is the organ system, so every code starting with N is an operation on the musculoskeletal system.
• KMÅ, medical procedures. Investigations, treatments, anaesthesia, rehabilitation and administrative measures. Codes have two letters and three digits.

KVÅ and ICD-10 go together

KVÅ says what was done; the diagnosis, coded with ICD-10 (ICD-10-SE in Sweden), says what the patient has. A complete record of a visit has both.
