How VAK20 is used
Swedish care providers record a KVÅ code for each procedure they carry out and report it, together with the patient’s ICD-10 diagnosis codes, to the National Patient Register. The diagnosis says what the patient has; the KVÅ code says what was done. Surgical codes have three letters and two digits and follow the Nordic NCSP classification: the first letter is the organ system, the next two the region and type of operation.
Based on Klassifikation av vårdåtgärder (KVÅ), developed by Socialstyrelsen and managed by E-hälsomyndigheten, the Swedish eHealth Agency, since 1 June 2026. This page is a reference, not coding advice; follow the national coding instructions when you report.
