Interview Studies and Thematic Analysis

Upload recordings or transcripts, review text, redact identifiers, code themes, compare participants, and prepare exports.

Interview Studies and Thematic Analysis

Start with Data

  1. Create an Interview study from Research home (it follows the COREQ reporting standard by default).
  2. Open the Data tab and add interview content using one of three options: Upload audio/video (MP3, WAV, M4A, WebM, MP4, OGG, FLAC), Import transcript files (TXT, MD, VTT, SRT, DOCX, PDF), or From patient visits when chart-linked recordings exist.
  3. Open each transcript to review wording, speaker labels, and timestamps. The Participants/Interviews/Codes/Documents counters in the side rail confirm what is loaded.
  4. Use PHI redaction when names or identifiers should not appear in analysis outputs.

Analyze and compare

Use Analyze to suggest, refine, merge, and review codes and themes — start with Analyze with AI on selected interviews and edit the suggestions before accepting them. Use Compare selected on two or more interviews when you want contradictions, patterns, or a custom side-by-side question.

Write and export

Use Write for summaries, findings, or full manuscript sections grounded in your codes and quotes. Use Export when you need transcripts, codebooks, comparison matrices, or files for supervisors, IRB/ethics submissions, manuscripts, or appendices.
